In Jesus' ministry we see times when even he found it necessary to get away for a period of rest and refreshment. Many times he would go to a place away from the crowds and distractions. If this were important for Jesus it is something we too need to do for our health and well being.
One of the places I go to get away from the crowds and distractions is the kitchen. Not to eat, but to pull out a favorite recipe. I find that when I start measuring and reading the directions I can put all else aside, concentrate on what I'm preparing and end up with a creative and fulfilling result.
In thinking about this article, I thought of taking all of this a step further. For the course of this year and into next, I will be sharing some of my favorite recipes and looking at them from a biblical perspective. The title of this series will be "Dining on the Word." I hope that this will offer something different but meaningful to our journey of faith. Remember, some of Jesus' most effective ministry was centered around a meal.
May 2010
May's recipe is a new one we tried a couple of weeks ago. It was new, different and we really enjoyed it. I think all of us like things that are new. Jesus talked about new things. He talked about a new commandment, new wine skins and a new covenant. Paul talked about a new creation. In Revelation 21:5, we see God's proclamation, "Behold, I make all things new." God is in the business of "new".
It seems to me that as God's people we need to be involved in God's business. One thing we are discovering is that it's crucial for us to discover new ways to be the church. This doesn't mean changing the message the church offers the world. It does mean finding new ways of sharing that message and making disciples for the transformation of our local community and the world. This means we need to rethink church. We need to discover ways to go beyond Sunday morning and beyond the doors of a building to reach out in our community and share the love and presence of Jesus Christ.
We currently have a Vision Team working on ways we can make this happen. The reality is, however, it takes more than a small group to make it happen. It takes all of us in response to our vows as members to support the church by our prayers, presence, gifts and service. Through our last General Conference we now add "...and our witness."
I urge you to consider new ways we can reach out to our community and make a real difference. I hope you will share you ideas with me as we rethink church and look forward to something new.
