In Jesus' ministry we see times when even he found it necessary to get away for a period of rest and refreshment. Many times he would go to a place away from the crowds and distractions. If this were important for Jesus it is something we too need to do for our health and well being.

One of the places I go to get away from the crowds and distractions is the kitchen. Not to eat, but to pull out a favorite recipe. I find that when I start measuring and reading the directions I can put all else aside, concentrate on what I'm preparing and end up with a creative and fulfilling result.

In thinking about this article, I thought of taking all of this a step further. For the course of this year and into next, I will be sharing some of my favorite recipes and looking at them from a biblical perspective. The title of this series will be "Dining on the Word." I hope that this will offer something different but meaningful to our journey of faith. Remember, some of Jesus' most effective ministry was centered around a meal.

Today’s recipe is a simple custard that’s difficult to stop with one serving. Sharon and I discoveredthat several years ago. The children were still living at home and one night when they were gone for the evening I made today’s custard recipe. The two of us dished up a couple of servings while it was still warm from the oven. We enjoyed it so much we dug into another serving. After another small sample, we looked at what was left and it was obvious that there wasn’t enough for the children on their return home. There was only one possible solution—eat what was left, clean up the evidence and keep silent when the children arrived.

Sometimes I wish it was that easy with God. It’s in Jeremiah 23:23-24 He says, “Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill the heaven and earth? says the Lord.”

God is not limited by space as he’s not made of physical matter. Because of his nature, He’s present in every place. In addition, he’s also unlimited in regard to knowledge. Nothing is hidden from his presence and knowledge.

For me this isn’t something to fear as much as it is something to marvel. Just think, God knows everything about me, my faults and my strengths, and continues to love me more than I could ever imagine. While I’m limited by space and knowledge, God knows no such limits. With this I can be confident in his presence and trust his all knowing and never ending love in my life.
